The
Friends of the Library would like to welcome back Cheryl Z. Miller to
the Amherst Town Library from June 3rd to July 14th. Cheryl will be exhibiting
her still lifes and scenic views fabric collages. A wonderful media using
cotton hand dyed and vintage fabrics while incorporating traditional and
modern quilting techniques to create a “painting” entirely
out of fabric. Cheryl has a BA in Art History from Hope College, where
she also took many studio art classes and has graduate certificate in
business from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She continues to
take painting and fabric workshops to learn new techniques. Cheryl grew
up in Columbus, Ohio which was a city surrounded by farms and has lived
in New Hampshire since 1996.
"I have recently
rekindled my love of textiles and have been making fabric collages and
mini art quilts as a side to my painting. My art aspires to convey a sense
of calm or reflection of the landscape around me as well as patterns and
history found in everyday objects. I'm inspired by the colors in nature,
locally grown food, old textiles and the outdoors. I think that viewers
respond to my work because it depicts familiar things in an unusual medium."
Cheryl
has a great interest in land preservation, organic farming and supports
local farms and artisans, themes that are often reflected in her work.
She is inspired by the natural beauty of New England, local farms, and
farmers markets. Cheryl also paints in oil because she loves the richness
of its color and is in awe of the French painters Corot and Monet for
the way they handled light and color and Vincent Van Gogh for his perseverance
and commitment to his art. Come meet Cheryl on Sunday June 9th from 2
to 4pm at on the main floor of the Amherst Town Library during a reception
surrounded by her collages.
